DESCRIPTION
The project involved creating fish passage between the river and an ephemeral channel located on the landward side of the railroad track.
high riverbank currently represents a barrier to fish passage when the channel is flowing. The project was to re-slope the channel downstream of the railroad culvert and install a rock ramp that will provide fish passage when the flow augmentation occurs. An excavator working from the channel bank excavated to the design grade and then placed the rock ramp material. To protect against scour, the rock ramp was buried into the bed of the Okanogan River approximately 10 ft horizontally and 2 ft vertically. Permanent fill volume within the Ordinary High Water Mark was 15 cubic yards. Gravel was distributed on site on completion of the project. All disturbed areas were revegetated with an appropriate mixture of local riparian plant species following construction of the rock ramp.
The Colville Confederated Tribes are planning an acclimation facility on another part of the property. The discharge from this facility and a well will be used to create year-round aquatic habitat in the ephemeral channel.
